Why Lock the Kiosk

An unattended tablet should only do one thing.

A kiosk left at an entrance should stay on the clock-in screen, full screen, and come back by itself after a power cut. How you do that depends on the tablet.

Before you start

  • Agency console: Admin or super admin to see the browser unlock PIN on Sites > Kiosk setup.
  • Client dashboard: tenant admin opens Sites > Kiosk setup, but the browser unlock PIN is not shown there. Ask your TempClock administrator for it.

Android Kiosk App (Recommended)

Full screen, restarts itself.

Install the TempClock Kiosk app. See The Android Kiosk App.
On first start, set the manager PIN for this tablet. There is no default PIN.
There is no exit button. A manager holds the top-left corner for 3 seconds and enters the PIN to reach Manager options: Change site, Change manager PIN, Reload the kiosk page or Exit the kiosk app.
Set TempClock as the tablet's home app so it opens by itself after a restart.

Browser Lock (iPad or Laptop)

Open the kiosk link

Open the site's kiosk link (scan the QR on Sites > Kiosk setup) and allow the camera and location when asked.

Lock it

Tap Lock kiosk in the kiosk header. It goes full screen, and stays locked after a reload.

If someone leaves full screen

The kiosk shows Kiosk mode active. Tap Return to fullscreen.

Unlocking

Tap Admin unlock, enter the PIN in Admin PIN and tap Unlock. In the agency console the PIN is on Sites > Kiosk setup under Browser kiosk unlock PIN: click Show. Do not show it on a projector or share it with site staff.

Important

A browser cannot fully stop someone leaving the page. The unlock PIN is also sent to the tablet inside the kiosk page, so anyone with the kiosk link can find it: treat Lock kiosk as a deterrent, not a security control. Always combine the browser lock with the tablet's own pinning feature below.

Important

If the agency console Kiosk setup page shows no Browser kiosk unlock PIN, your instance is using a built-in default PIN that is the same on every instance. Ask TempClock support to set your own PIN before go-live.

Tablet Settings

Use the device's own lock as well.

Tablet Feature
iPad Guided Access (Settings, Accessibility, Guided Access), started on the kiosk page.
Android (browser) Screen Pinning. Not needed with the TempClock Kiosk app.
Note

Keep the tablet on mains power in a lockable stand, and at a site with no usable Wi-Fi use a tablet with 4G mobile data: face checks need a connection.

Troubleshooting

Common problems.

Problem What to do
Incorrect PIN. The browser unlock PIN is wrong. Check it on Kiosk setup in the agency console.
Lost the Android manager PIN Clear the app's storage in Android Settings or reinstall it, then set a new PIN. See The Android Kiosk App.
The iPad leaves the kiosk Turn on Guided Access, then start it again on the kiosk page.
